Éruption — Fuego

Fuego volcano in Guatemala is experiencing active eruptive activity. Between August 3 and 5, a period of stronger volcanic activity occurred over 50 hours, producing pyroclastic density currents that altered the crater and caused rockfalls in ravines on the western and southwestern flanks. Ashfall primarily affected communities in San Pedro Yepocapa municipality in Chimaltenango, with lower-level activity continuing through mid-August.

If you are on site within the affected radius of approximately 50 kilometers, you should monitor local conditions closely. Ashfall can reduce visibility and affect air quality. Communities on the western and southwestern flanks face the greatest exposure to volcanic hazards including ash, rockfalls, and pyroclastic flows.

Follow all instructions from local authorities and INSIVUMEH, Guatemala's national seismology and volcanology institute. Avoid areas near ravines on the volcano's western and southwestern sides. If ashfall occurs, stay indoors with windows closed and seek guidance from local health authorities regarding respiratory protection. Keep informed through official channels for any evacuation orders or updated hazard information.
